Cultural Entry 2

The above is a video of Nawaf Al Abed scoring a goal directly from kickoff in his club's match against Al Shoalah on November 7, 2009. His team, Al Hilal, went on to win the match (and the Prince Faisal bin Fahad Cup) 4-0 thanks to Al Abed's quick goal. Al Hilal plays in the professional soccer league in Saudi Arabia. Currently, it is leading the pack with seven wins and a draw for a total of 22 points. Trailing Al Hilal is second-lace team, Al Shabab. With six wins, a draw and a loss, they have 19 points going into this weekend's matches. On November 21, first-place Al Hilal will face bottom-dweller, Al Ittifaq. With two draws and four losses, Al Ittifaq holds the lowest position in the league's current standings and is still searching for its first win. While it is unlikely that Al Hilal will have much of a problem dispatching the Al Ittifaq side, Al Abed's goal has shown us the unpredictability of the beautiful game. My reason for posting this comes from my love of soccer as both player and spectator. Stumbling across this video the other day, I immediately realized its application to our Arabic class and so I chose to use it.
